X is shutting down its revenue-sharing program for content creators and replacing it with a new initiative called Original Content Rewards, set to launch on September 8, 2026.
To qualify, creators must have at least 500 verified followers and at least 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users within the last 90 days, along with other unspecified requirements. Earnings will be based on “qualified impressions” — defined as unique impressions from Premium subscribers on the Home Timeline feed where at least 50% of the post is visible.
The program defines eligible “original content” as original reporting or analysis, videos and photos taken by the creator, and graphics or illustrations including memes. Commentary and reactions may also qualify, provided they “add something meaningful,” according to X’s guidelines. Simply repurposing others’ content or replying to posts would not generate income under the new system.
Allegra Jacchia, Senior Product Manager for Creators at SpaceXAI, stated on X that the program was designed to “reward the creators who bring original ideas, expertise, creativity, and unique perspectives to 𝕏 — not those who have become best at gaming the system.” X’s announcement framed the change as a shift away from loophole exploitation and clickbait.
Creators currently enrolled in the revenue-sharing program will continue to earn through September 7, 2026, the day before the new program takes effect.
The revenue-sharing program being replaced has undergone numerous revisions since Elon Musk took control of the platform. The new eligibility criteria and narrower definition of qualifying content could significantly affect which creators are able to monetize their posts on X going forward.
