Patreon announced a broad set of platform updates in August 2026, including a revamped discovery algorithm, new video tools, and enhanced security features aimed at improving the experience for both creators and fans.
The most significant change is an overhaul of how Patreon surfaces creators to potential new followers. The existing algorithm recommended creators based on who fans already follow — a system that tended to favor larger, more established creators. The updated approach will instead compare post content directly, analyzing topic, style, craft, and themes to surface relevant work. Patreon says this shift could make it easier for smaller creators to get discovered.
CEO Jack Conte outlined the changes in a lengthy blog post, framing them as a response to broader problems with the current internet. “The current version of the web is a failed promise for creators and fandoms,” Conte wrote. “Social media has created mass polarization, addiction, and made it increasingly difficult to build a creative community and business.”
On the video side, Patreon is rolling out a Clips tool for iOS that automatically identifies strong moments in longer videos, which creators can then turn into short clips for sharing on or off the platform. The company is also introducing Niches — topic-based communities described as similar to subreddits — along with more customizable creator page layouts, custom unblurred thumbnails for public posts, and anti-scraping protections to guard creators’ content from unauthorized use by AI systems.
Additional security improvements include stronger verification checks for user sign-in. Several of the announced features are still in development and subject to change based on community feedback during testing.
The roadmap comes roughly seven months after Patreon laid off 20 percent of its staff in January 2026. At the time, Conte said the company’s adoption of AI had “fundamentally transformed” how it operates, while maintaining that he does not believe “AI replaces humans.”
