OpenAI launched an Apple Messages plug-in for ChatGPT in August 2026, allowing users to connect their Messages inbox directly to the chatbot. The integration enables ChatGPT to sort, analyze, edit, draft, and send messages on a user’s behalf, as well as delete messages and search through message history.
The plug-in also works with Codex and ChatGPT Work, meaning it can be used in professional contexts as well as personal ones. A promotional video released alongside the launch shows a user asking ChatGPT to suggest follow-up messages to contacts based on conversations from the previous day.
The feature raises privacy questions given that it connects a user’s private message inbox to an AI system. OpenAI told Bloomberg that the plug-in runs locally on a user’s machine and does not “create an index of all someone’s messages,” though the company has not provided further detail on what that means in practice. TechCrunch has sought additional clarification from OpenAI.
On the question of automated sending, OpenAI advises users to monitor what the chatbot is doing and discourages enabling persistent approval. The company warns that turning on that setting “removes your final chance to review a message before ChatGPT sends it as you.”
The integration could raise concerns for users who share conversations with contacts who have not consented to having their messages processed through a third-party AI system. The extent of data handling involved remains unclear pending further disclosure from OpenAI.
