Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis published a blog post in July 2026 calling for the creation of a global AI regulatory body led by the United States, arguing that oversight of powerful AI systems has become increasingly urgent.
In the post, titled “A Framework for Frontier AI and the Dawning of a New Age,” Hassabis proposed an organization modeled on existing regulators such as the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority. It would be staffed by independent experts and representatives from open-source communities, and would have the authority to evaluate frontier AI models before release and coordinate an industry-wide slowdown if any model were judged too risky to deploy.
Hassabis argued the US is best positioned to lead the effort “given its economic and technical standing.” According to Axios, he has spent months quietly building support for the proposal, briefing the Trump administration, other AI labs, and European officials. He told Axios that “the noises I’ve been hearing [from the Trump administration] are very positive,” and hopes to have the organization operational before the end of the year.
The push comes as Hassabis warned that artificial general intelligence “is probably only a few short years away.” He wrote that future generations “will realise we were standing in the foothills of the singularity — nothing less than the dawning of a new age for humanity.”
Currently, no global regulatory framework specifically governs AI, and the US has no comprehensive national rules in place. Hassabis, who shared the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for AI-based protein prediction work, also signed a statement last month calling for stronger protections against AI-aided bioweapons production.
His proposal follows a separate statement from economists and tech figures — including Anthropic cofounder Jack Clark and former Google CEO Eric Schmidt — urging world leaders to address AI’s looming economic impacts.
