Apple announced significant improvements to its Image Playground app at WWDC 2026 on Monday, June 8, 2026, addressing longstanding quality concerns with the built-in AI image-generation tool available on iPhone.
Apple Senior Director Leslie Ikemoto presented the updates, describing expanded capabilities that allow users to generate images from their Photos library, transform existing photos into different styles using natural language descriptions, and adjust images with follow-up prompts — such as adding candles to a cake or changing a subject’s outfit.
The updated app also supports custom image dimensions, including landscape formats for websites and portrait formats for flyers. Because Image Playground is integrated across Apple devices, it can also be used to generate lock screens, iMessage backgrounds, and contact posters.
On privacy, Ikemoto stated that images processed through Image Playground are handled via private cloud compute, meaning photos are never stored or shared, even with Apple.
The announcement comes as Apple works to improve the overall performance of its Apple Intelligence platform, which powers Image Playground and other AI-driven features. The app has been available on iPhones but has seen limited adoption, in part due to output quality that fell short of competing AI image tools.
Apple has not yet made the updated version of Image Playground available for hands-on testing. The WWDC 2026 presentation suggested the broader Apple Intelligence overhaul could improve performance across AI-powered apps, though real-world results remain to be seen.
