Anthropic introduced Claude Science on June 30, 2026, an AI workbench designed to give scientists a single environment for computational research, eliminating the need to switch between databases, pipelines, and tools.
Anthropic was explicit that Claude Science is not a new or more capable AI model. It runs the same Claude models already available to all users, including Claude Opus 4.8, with no special access or gating. The workbench builds on Anthropic’s October 2025 launch of Claude for Life Sciences and was announced at an AI for Science briefing.
The platform works through a main AI assistant that functions as a project manager, connecting to more than 60 scientific databases and offering prebuilt toolkits for fields including genomics, protein structure, and chemistry. That assistant can spin up sub-assistants to divide work or hand tasks off to custom “expert” assistants built by individual researchers. A separate fact-checker AI reviews citations and calculations before publication.
Claude Science also supports reproducibility by generating figures — such as 3D protein structures and chemistry diagrams — alongside the exact code, environment details, plain-language descriptions, and full message history used to produce them. The workbench can run on a lab’s own infrastructure rather than routing data through Anthropic’s servers.
Early users include Allen Institute neuroscientist Jérôme Lecoq, who built a multi-agent computational review pipeline, and a group at the UCSF Brain Tumor Center that used the tool to accelerate germline analysis of glioma with independently validated results.
The launch positions Anthropic alongside two other approaches to AI-assisted science. OpenAI released GPT-Rosalind in April 2026, a specialized biology model available only to qualified enterprise customers in the U.S. Google DeepMind offers its Gemini for Science platform, which bundles proprietary models like AlphaFold and AlphaGenome with more than 30 life science databases.
Claude Science is available in beta to users on Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise subscriptions. Anthropic also announced support for up to 50 research projects, offering up to $30,000 in credits each for postdoctoral and graduate work. Applications are open through July 15, 2026, with projects running from September 1 to December 1, 2026.
