Google announced during its Q2 2026 earnings call that its AI assistant Gemini now has over 950 million monthly active users, putting it on the verge of joining the company’s roster of billion-user products that already includes Search, Gmail, Drive, Android, YouTube, and Chrome.
The figure represents a tripling of Gemini’s user base compared to the same period last year. As recently as February 2026, Google had reported the Gemini app at 750 million monthly active users, meaning the product added roughly 200 million users in a matter of months.
Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai attributed the growth in part to new features. “Users love new agentic features like Daily Brief and our personalized agent, Gemini Spark, which is now available in the U.S. and internationally. We’ve been shipping helpful new features like this at an incredible pace,” Pichai said on the call.
Beyond Android, the Gemini app has gained traction on iOS — aided by launches such as the Nano Banana image generation model — with more than 137 million iOS downloads recorded over the past 12 months, according to data from Appfigures.
The growth puts Gemini in closer competition with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which reached 1 billion monthly active users in June 2026. Analytics firm Sensor Tower’s latest “State of AI” report, covering the first half of 2026, noted that ChatGPT’s market share among AI assistants fell below 50% for the first time, while Gemini’s share rose to 27.7%.
Google also reported that its AI Mode search feature crossed 1 billion users this quarter, with the company saying it is driving an incremental increase in search queries. Google added that hardware engineering improvements have helped reduce the cost of running AI Mode despite the rollout of new models and features.
