Amazon Web Services announced on June 30, 2026, the launch of a new internal organization dedicated to forward-deployed engineers (FDEs) focused on AI deployments, committing $1 billion in internal resources to the effort.
Under the program, AWS engineers will embed directly within client companies to deploy purpose-built AI agents, with an emphasis on fast engagements and enabling customers to operate independently once the deployment is complete. AWS VP of Frontier AI Francessca Vasquez stated in the announcement that clients will leave deployments with more than just working systems. “Along with agentic systems running in their own AWS environment, they gain lasting AI skills, workflows, and patterns they can use to innovate independently,” the announcement reads.
The $1 billion figure represents internal Amazon resources rather than a joint venture or outside investment. This distinguishes the AWS effort from similar programs recently launched by OpenAI and Anthropic, which partnered with private equity firms to create joint ventures valued at $4 billion and $1.5 billion, respectively. Those partnerships gave the AI labs access to outside capital and connections with corporations in their partners’ portfolios.
The forward-deployed engineer model was pioneered by Palantir and has grown in adoption as a way to manage complex technology rollouts. In the model, an engineer from the contracting company works temporarily inside the client organization, allowing them to respond to internal needs and challenges as they arise. Much of the underlying technology can be reused across deployments while still being customized to each client’s workflows. The primary tradeoff is the labor cost of maintaining a dedicated corps of engineers.
The move comes as companies increasingly seek outside expertise to navigate AI integration, suggesting demand for structured deployment support is growing across the enterprise sector.
