Proton released Lumo 2.0 on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, an upgrade to its privacy-focused AI chatbot that adds image capabilities, faster performance, and expanded project tools.
The new version introduces image recognition and image generation, allowing users to upload pictures for analysis or editing, as well as generate images from text prompts. Lumo 2.0 also responds to most queries up to 76% faster than the previous version and includes a new “thinking mode” designed for more complex problems.
The update also expands the chatbot’s Projects feature, which lets users upload documents and work across Proton’s suite of products including email and cloud storage. Projects now support user-controlled persistent memory, enabling Lumo to recall preferences across separate conversation sessions.
“Lumo 2.0 has been re-engineered from the ground up and the introduction of thinking mode gives it powerful new capabilities,” said Andy Yen, founder and CEO of Proton. “Lumo 2.0 demonstrates that users no longer need to choose between powerful AI capabilities and meaningful privacy protections.”
Proton differentiates Lumo from competing chatbots through its privacy architecture. The company uses zero-access encryption, which encrypts user data both in transit and at rest, limiting access to the user alone. Proton also states that no server-side logging of sessions is retained and that customer data is never used for AI training or shared with third parties.
Lumo 2.0 is available immediately. A free public version is offered alongside paid Plus and Professional tiers, which provide greater access and resources. For users who prioritize data privacy alongside AI utility, the upgrade may present a more capable alternative to mainstream chatbot options.
