X released a fully rebuilt version of its Android app on July 20, 2026, making it available globally through the Google Play Store. Existing users can get the new version by updating through the Play Store.
The app was written from scratch on a Kotlin and Jetpack Compose stack, rather than being incrementally updated. X head of product Nikita Bier described the project as “one of the largest engineering projects” in the company’s history. The rebuild promises improvements to loading speeds, scrolling, and notifications.
Work on the new app began nearly a year ago. Last August, Bier announced X was assembling an Android “dream team” to overhaul the experience. The urgency was reinforced that fall, when Bier noted X had recorded one of its biggest weeks ever for Android downloads in October — signaling the platform’s importance to the company’s growth.
The Android app had long lagged behind its iOS counterpart. Problems at one point became severe enough that the app could not load posts when users clicked links.
“It’s faster, smoother and more reliable. But most of all: it will enable us to build new features at lightning speed,” Bier wrote on X.
Bier cautioned that some issues remain, including performance on older Android devices and the absence of Spaces, X’s live audio feature. Support for Spaces and other features — including a new video editor, a react-with-video feature, cashtags, and custom timelines — are still coming to Android.
The release could potentially help X attract or re-engage users in global markets where Android is the dominant smartphone platform. X has also been expanding its product lineup in recent months, launching X Money and X Chat as standalone apps.
