The Trump administration has authorized Anthropic to restore access to its cybersecurity AI model, Mythos 5, for more than 100 U.S. government agencies and companies — including their non-American employees. The move, reported by Semafor and Reuters, marks a partial reversal of a ban that had been in place since June 12, 2026.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick communicated the decision to Anthropic’s chief compute officer Tom Brown in a letter seen by Semafor. “I have determined that appropriate safeguards are in place to permit certain trusted partners to access the Claude Mythos 5 Model,” Lutnick wrote. The authorized list also includes Anthropic’s own non-American employees, who had been caught under the original ban.
The ban was put in place approximately two weeks ago after Anthropic pulled both Mythos 5 and a related model, Fable 5, from the market. Security researchers had allegedly bypassed the models’ safety guardrails, prompting the withdrawal. Fable 5 had been publicly released a few days before the ban, and was described as having stronger protections than Mythos 5. The administration’s latest directive does not address Fable 5.
Anthropic acknowledged the development in a post on X on Friday: “Since June 12, we’ve been working closely with the US government to restore access to Claude Mythos 5 and Fable 5. Today, the government notified us that Mythos 5, our strongest cybersecurity model, can be redeployed to a set of US organizations that operate and defend critical infrastructure.”
The company added that it is “continuing to work with the government to expand access to Mythos 5 and make Fable 5 available for general use again,” suggesting broader restoration of both models may still be under negotiation. Anthropic did not respond to a request for further comment.
