TikTok is laying off 250 employees and closing its Nashville office, the company confirmed in August 2026. The news was first reported by The New York Times.
Zanna Crowley, a spokesperson for the TikTok USDS Joint Venture, confirmed the layoffs, saying the move was intended to “streamline our operations and better align our teams for long-term growth.” The Nashville office, which TikTok leased in 2024, is scheduled to close on October 5.
The Nashville location housed members of TikTok’s content-moderation team. The cuts come as social media companies increasingly rely on AI to monitor and remove violent or explicit content from their platforms, a shift that may reduce the need for large human moderation workforces.
In a statement, Crowley said the company remains “fully committed to providing secure, safe and positive experiences for the 200 million Americans that create, discover and connect with what they love on TikTok.”
For the affected employees, the closure represents a significant workforce reduction tied to a single regional office. For TikTok’s broader user base, the company’s statement suggests it does not anticipate a change in its content safety standards despite the reduction in moderation staff.
