Superhuman has acquired GPTZero, the AI detection startup founded by Princeton graduate Edward Tian, the companies announced on Tuesday, June 23, 2026.
GPTZero was originally built by Tian as a senior thesis project roughly three years ago. By the time of the acquisition, the company had accumulated more than 19 million registered users and $30 million in annual recurring revenue. Tian had previously told TechCrunch in 2024 that the company was profitable. GPTZero raised a total of $13.5 million across two funding rounds — a $3.5 million seed round led by Uncork Capital and a $10 million Series A in June 2024 led by Footwork co-founder Nikhil Basu Trivedi, with participation from Reach Capital, Jack Altman’s Alt Capital, and Neo. Tian co-founded the company with high school friend Alex Cui, who served as CTO. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
Superhuman is the company formed when Grammarly acquired email provider Superhuman last year and rebranded under that name. GPTZero’s stated mission has been to help users detect and defend against AI-generated content. Grammarly’s existing AI detection tool was designed to help users — often students — determine whether their writing appears AI-generated and revise it accordingly. Asked why it acquired a competitor, Superhuman stated that “two AI detectors are better than one.”
The deal brings together two AI detection products under a single company. Superhuman now holds both its existing detection tool and GPTZero’s technology, which may suggest plans to expand or enhance its AI detection capabilities, though the company has not detailed how the two products will be integrated going forward.
