Spotify launched a dedicated running mode in its mobile app in July 2026, offering Premium subscribers a way to sync music to different phases of their workouts. The feature became available on Wednesday to iOS users in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Sweden.
Found within Spotify’s Fitness Hub, running mode lets users choose from 25 presets covering workout types such as interval runs, steady runs, and pyramid sessions. Subscribers can customize the duration, beats per minute, and music genre to match their preferences. The mode selects tracks dynamically based on those inputs and the tempo of each run phase.
Beyond music playback, running mode can also generate audio cues tied to specific stages of a run. That audio cue feature currently supports English only.
Spotify said the new mode builds on AI capabilities the company has been developing through its prompted playlists feature over the past year. The company noted that many users were already creating playlists for fitness and workout purposes using that tool, and running mode was developed in response to those usage patterns. Earlier in 2026, Spotify also introduced fitness content through a partnership with exercise equipment maker Peloton.
The launch comes a few months after fitness tracking app Strava announced it would end its Spotify integration within its Record feature, a change that may affect users who relied on that connection for run-time listening.
Running mode is currently limited to Premium subscribers on iOS. No timeline for Android availability or expansion to additional countries was mentioned.
