Rippling Launches AI Spend Console After Internal AI Costs Hit 40% of R&D Payroll

HR software company Rippling unveiled AI Spend Console in August 2026, a tool that tracks and manages employee AI spending after the company’s own internal AI costs spiraled out of control earlier in the year.

The wake-up call came in March 2026, when Rippling’s CFO Adam Swiecicki presented figures showing the company was on track to spend the equivalent of 40% of its entire R&D headcount budget on AI tokens — millions of dollars. Spending was growing at 80% month-over-month, and projections suggested token costs could reach 90% of R&D compensation within a year. “We were incredulous,” Chief Product Officer Matt MacInnis told TechCrunch.

An internal analysis revealed that 10–15% of employees were driving roughly 60% of total AI spend, with one engineer alone spending $50,000 a month. Rippling found that employees were routinely defaulting to the newest and most expensive frontier models for all tasks, regardless of whether those models were necessary.

AI Spend Console addresses this by routing prompts through Rippling’s own AI gateway to more cost-effective models based on the task. The tool produces dashboards that track individual and team AI spending alongside productivity metrics such as lines of code written and pull requests completed — flagging, for example, engineers with high AI spend whose code peers frequently ask to be redone.

After deploying the solution internally, Rippling reduced its token spend from 40% of its headcount budget to roughly 15%. Token volume remained high — around 600 billion tokens in July, near the April peak — but July’s costs were 37% of what April’s had been, MacInnis said, attributing the savings to smarter model routing.

Rippling CEO Parker Conrad noted the company’s own benchmarks found Z.ai’s GLM 5.2 offered nearly identical performance to frontier models at 85% lower cost for many tasks.

AI Spend Console is included for existing Rippling HR subscribers, with additional usage-based costs, and is also available as a standalone product compatible with other HR systems.
