Plex experienced a widespread service outage on July 14, 2026, leaving many users unable to stream content from their personal media servers or access the platform’s other features.
The disruption affected multiple parts of the Plex platform, including its free streaming movies and shows, the plex.tv API, Discover Together, and program guide data for live TV. Problems were reported on Plex’s own forums and on Reddit, with the outage lasting more than an hour at the time of reporting.
Users described significant degradation across the service. “Basically all Plex is down unless you can play locally over LAN and even that takes ages and doesn’t always work,” one user wrote. Others reported problems with content matching on their servers.
Plex confirmed the issues via its status page and posted on X acknowledging the problems. “We are currently aware and investigating some unexpected issues with Plex, including Live TV, our on demand services, and our API services,” the company wrote, directing users to the Plex Status page. The company did not immediately reply to a press request for comment.
Plex is widely used as a way to stream locally hosted movies and TV shows, making the outage particularly frustrating for users who rely on the platform to access their own media libraries. The fact that even local LAN playback was reportedly affected suggests the outage extended beyond cloud-dependent features. The cause of the disruption had not been disclosed at the time of publication.
