New York finalizes rules requiring age verification for algorithmic social media feeds

New York’s final SAFE for Kids Act rules (2026) require age verification to access algorithmic feeds—or 12 a.m.–6 a.m. notifications—on platforms where users spend at least 20% of time in those feeds. Platforms must keep false positives low, detect circumvention 98% of the time, offer a method besides government ID, and delete or de-identify verification data; Jan. 25, 2027 starts enforcement.
