OpenAI announced in August 2026 the launch of ChatGPT for Teens, a dedicated mode for users aged 13 to 17 that consolidates existing youth safeguards with a set of new safety features. The mode will apply automatically to users who identify as being between 13 and 17, as well as those the system estimates to be under 18. Users under 13 are not permitted on the platform under OpenAI’s age policy.
OpenAI described the teen experience as one “designed to help teens learn, think critically, deepen understanding, and use AI with confidence,” according to a blog post published Tuesday. The company said the launch comes as public scrutiny over AI’s effects on younger users has grown, and as other platforms have introduced their own age verification and teen-specific protections.
The mode applies a range of protections by default, including tighter restrictions on graphic violence, self-harm depictions, and sexual or romantic roleplay. It will also surface safety warnings around topics such as eating disorders. Parents gain controls to set quiet hours and receive notifications when the system flags a potential safety concern.
Additional features target what OpenAI calls “healthy, balanced use.” These include reminders around sensitive image uploads, teen-specific onboarding, and customization options such as accent colors and voice variations. New “responsible homework reminders” are designed to detect when a teen appears to be attempting to shortcut an assignment and redirect them to a dedicated study mode. Teens and parents can also set “study hours” that automatically activate study mode during chosen times.
OpenAI acknowledged that many of the protections are not entirely new. Age-prediction features were introduced at the start of 2026, while parental controls and study mode launched roughly a year prior. The company said it plans to publish further safety research and build additional teen-focused features going forward.
