OpenAI announced in August 2026 that it is removing limits on text-based chats for all ChatGPT users, alongside the introduction of new AI models across its free and paid tiers. The changes roll out this week and next for most users, with some features already live for paid subscribers.
The new GPT-5.6 Luna model will power the unlimited text chat experience and become the default model for Free and Go users, replacing GPT-5.5. Free and Go users will also receive a new “Think” button, which allows them to select higher reasoning power for more complex questions. Separate limits will remain in place for files, images, voice, and image generation.
Plus and Pro subscribers are getting their own upgrade in the form of GPT-5.6 Sol, a model designed for quick tasks including questions, web research, advice, planning, writing, and decision-making. OpenAI said the model delivers more compact and robust answers. This version is distinct from the GPT-5.6 Sol used for Codex and Work, which remains unchanged. Plus and Pro users are also gaining a thinking slider that lets them control how much reasoning the model applies to a given query, adjustable based on the complexity of the task.
According to an internal OpenAI evaluation, factual errors were 62% less common with GPT-5.6 Luna and 68% less common with GPT-5.6 Sol compared to GPT-5.5-Instant. The company did not detail the methodology behind this evaluation.
The updated GPT-5.6 Sol is available to Plus and Pro users today. Free and Go users will receive unlimited text chats and the Think button starting next week. The announcement comes as ChatGPT recently crossed 1 billion weekly users, a milestone OpenAI cited alongside the update.
