OpenAI is releasing a hardware device tied to its AI-powered coding tool, Codex, on July 15, 2026. The company teased the product in a video posted to X, showing a square-shaped device with several buttons and the caption, “Your favorite Codex shortcuts are getting an upgrade.”
The device is being launched in partnership with Work Louder, a company that makes mechanical keyboards and macro pads with mappable keys, dials, and switches. The silhouette shown in the teaser resembles Work Louder’s Creator Micro 2, a macro pad that features 13 mechanical switches, a joystick, and a touch sensor. That device allows users to assign shortcuts and custom actions to its toggles for use with specific applications. Figma has previously partnered with Work Louder on a similar macro pad with preconfigured shortcuts.
Neither OpenAI nor Work Louder has shared additional details about the collaboration ahead of the launch.
The upcoming device is separate from the AI-powered hardware OpenAI is reportedly developing with former Apple designer Jony Ive. With a launch date two weeks away at the time of the announcement, more details are expected soon.
For developers and coders who use Codex, the partnership suggests the device may offer hardware shortcuts designed to streamline AI-assisted coding workflows, though OpenAI has not confirmed specific functionality beyond the teaser.
