Notion is discontinuing its email product, Notion Mail, on September 22, 2026, saying it will focus instead on AI agents that handle email on users’ behalf.
The productivity company announced the shutdown in a post on X, citing a significant shift in how its users interact with email. “As Notion agents have gotten more capable, we’ve seen more users hand off email workflows to them. Today, more than half of Notion Mail users manage emails without ever opening their inbox. So, we’re going all in on using agents to run your inbox,” the company said.
Notion Mail launched in preview mode in 2024 following Notion’s acquisition of security-focused productivity startup Skiff. The product was designed to integrate email with Notion AI, offering features such as auto-labeling, filtering, and scheduling assistance. It became broadly available to users in April 2025, positioning Notion to compete with email clients like Superhuman and Fyxer.
Because Notion Mail connects with Gmail, existing emails in users’ inboxes will remain intact after the shutdown. However, Notion is advising users to export any drafts and scheduled emails they wish to keep. The company added that exported snippets and auto-label instructions can be used elsewhere, and that Notion’s email-based agents will continue to function after Notion Mail closes.
The decision suggests that AI agent-driven email management may be displacing traditional inbox interfaces, at least within Notion’s user base. Newer startups such as AgentMail are also building email services designed specifically for agents, signaling broader movement in this direction across the industry.
