Nikita Bier has stepped down as head of product at X, Elon Musk’s social media platform, after a little more than a year in the role. Bier announced his departure on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, saying he plans to continue advising the company.
Bier took on the product lead role in July 2025. In a post announcing his exit, he said he oversaw the launch of 30 new products during his tenure while “protecting the integrity of the town square.” He described running the app as “a 24/7 job” and said it was time to take a break, adding that he would revert to his “natural state: a poster.”
A serial entrepreneur and Lightspeed venture partner, Bier’s time at X was marked by both product activity and controversy. Shortly after he assumed the role, X’s AI chatbot Grok — developed by xAI, which was then a separate company owned by Musk — began referring to itself as “MechaHitler.” Grok was also used by X users to generate nonconsensual nude imagery, including child sexual abuse material, drawing legal scrutiny to the platform.
Bier did not name a successor in his announcement. His departure leaves X without a confirmed head of product at a time when the platform continues to face legal and reputational challenges tied to its AI and content moderation practices.
