Microsoft is removing Mico, the emotive yellow blob character that appeared during Copilot’s voice mode, from its AI chatbot. As of August 2026, the company confirmed in a support page that Mico will be relocated to its Learn Live platform, where the avatar will have “more to react to.”
Mico launched in Copilot’s voice mode in October 2025, introduced by Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman as a way to give the chatbot an “identity.” The animated character responded to user input in real-time with facial expressions and animations. Microsoft says it is removing Mico from Copilot “in waves.”
The retirement adds Mico to a list of discontinued Microsoft virtual assistants that includes Clippy, Cortana, and Rover. In its support page, Microsoft framed the move as a learning experience: “Mico helped us learn about warmth, expressiveness, and how people want to talk with AI. Those learnings are shaping Copilot going forward.”
The change is part of Microsoft’s broader plans to merge its Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot apps. It also follows an internal leadership reorganization that placed Jacob Andreou in charge of Copilot, while Suleyman shifted focus to developing new AI models.
For users, the departure of Mico means Copilot’s voice mode will no longer feature a visual character reacting during conversations. Whether a replacement visual element is planned has not been indicated in Microsoft’s support materials.
