Microsoft announced in August 2026 that it is consolidating its consumer and commercial Copilot AI assistants into a single unified app, replacing the separate Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot apps with one application under the revived “Microsoft Copilot” name and a new icon.
The rollout begins in mid-August 2026 for mobile and web platforms, with Windows and Mac app updates following in mid-September. Some Windows Insiders will begin seeing the changes this week. Mobile users will be prompted to download the new app, while existing Copilot users will have their chats and content automatically migrated. Microsoft 365 Copilot app users will receive minor navigation changes, the updated icon, and access to Copilot chat. Users of both apps will have their content merged into the single application.
Microsoft described the update as a technical milestone ahead of a broader “super app” it plans to launch later in 2026. “Starting with a fresh look, the updated app combines the best of Copilot chat and image creation, with the power of Microsoft 365 for your work,” the company said in its announcement.
Personal Microsoft accounts and work or school Microsoft Entra ID accounts will remain separate within the unified app, and Microsoft says enterprise security, compliance, and government controls are unchanged. Core Copilot features will remain free, though some users may see different usage limits.
Not everything carries over. Podcasts and Deep Research features are being retired and will be unavailable after August 18th. Group Chat threads and content will also not transfer to the new app. Features including Shopping and Copilot Health may be temporarily unavailable during the transition.
The consolidation follows Microsoft’s appointment of a new Copilot chief to oversee both the consumer and commercial sides of the assistant. The redesign moves Copilot toward the commercial user interface, stepping away from the distinct design introduced in 2024 after Microsoft AI chief Mustafa Suleyman joined the company.
