Meta announced in September 2026 that developers can now use AI coding agents to set up and manage WhatsApp Business messaging through a new Model Context Protocol (MCP) server called WhatsApp Business Tools MCP.
The new server connects AI agents — including Claude, Cursor, Codex, and ChatGPT — directly to the WhatsApp Business Platform. Developers can describe what they need in plain language, and the agent handles the technical work, rather than requiring developers to move between multiple tools such as the Developer Console, Meta’s Business Manager, the API reference, and their code editor.
Tasks the AI agent can handle include creating a WhatsApp Business account, adding and verifying a phone number, registering for access to the Cloud API, and checking a business’s Terms of Service status. Businesses can also use the agent to create or edit messaging templates, test messages and webhooks, and monitor items that may have previously failed silently — such as payment method status and Business Verification.
The WhatsApp Business Tools MCP expands Meta’s existing lineup of MCP servers, which previously covered managing ads, monitoring app configurations, and other social technologies. Meta noted that its Meta Social Technologies MCP server can also be used alongside the new tool to discover API endpoints, search documentation, and troubleshoot errors during setup.
Meta is not alone in offering this type of integration. The company noted that other tech firms providing MCP servers include PayPal, Stripe, GitHub, Notion, Slack, Salesforce, Atlassian, X, Google, and Microsoft.
The announcement was made alongside news of Meta’s new AI-focused subscription plans. For developers and businesses working with WhatsApp’s customer messaging platform, the change could reduce the time and complexity involved in initial configuration and ongoing management.
