Meta announced in August 2026 the launch of a dedicated Mac app for its AI chatbot, Meta AI. The app allows users to share their screen window with the chatbot, which can then provide suggestions, answer questions, or generate content based on what is currently displayed. The app also supports dictation across all other apps on the Mac.
The launch positions Meta AI more directly as a productivity-focused assistant. Several of Meta’s competitors already offer desktop apps: Google’s Gemini supports window sharing, while OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude go further by allowing their chatbots to take control of a user’s computer.
Alongside the Mac app, Meta is rolling out new capabilities aimed at businesses and creators. The AI chatbot can now connect directly with Instagram and Facebook accounts, Meta ad campaigns, and Google Workspace — accessible via the web, mobile, and the new Mac app.
In practice, this means Meta AI can analyze the performance of social media posts — including reach, likes, shares, and saves — and suggest what to post next. It can also pull data from a business’s account and the web to produce decks, documents, and spreadsheets, and handle recurring tasks such as generating weekly performance updates.
The expansion of Meta AI’s capabilities across desktop and business tools suggests the company is working to close the gap with rival AI products that have established stronger footholds in productivity and desktop environments.
