Google announced in 2026 that it is renaming its AI-powered research tool NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook, continuing the company’s pattern of folding its AI products under the Gemini brand. The change is accompanied by a new feature that allows users to run code directly within their notebooks for data analysis.
The tool was first introduced at Google I/O in 2023 under the name Project Tailwind before becoming NotebookLM. Over the past three years, Google has grown the product to 30 million users and more than 600,000 organizations, adding capabilities such as interactive podcast generation, curated notebooks, video overviews, support for additional file types, and an enterprise plan.
The new update makes each notebook a secure container in which users can generate code to produce interactive outputs. Google says this code execution capability allows users to draw on multiple sources and perform complex data analysis within the tool.
The feature is currently available to Google AI Ultra paid plan subscribers, as well as Workspace business customers with AI Ultra Access and AI Expanded Access. Pro users are expected to receive access in the coming weeks.
Google also noted that users can already view their notebooks within the Gemini app, with access through AI Mode in Search coming soon.
The rename reflects Google’s broader strategy of consolidating its AI products under the Gemini umbrella. NotebookLM’s influence has also extended beyond Google — the source notes that other companies and startups have since added podcast generation and research tools inspired by the product’s capabilities.
