Google launched early access to a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for its Google Home ecosystem in September 2026, allowing AI agents to control connected smart home devices using natural language commands.
The MCP server enables compatible AI agents — including Claude, Hermes, OpenClaw, ChatGPT, and Google Antigravity — to interact with Google Home devices, review camera summaries, monitor smart home activity, and help users build custom smart home dashboards. Supported hardware includes Google Nest doorbells and thermostats, as well as “Works with Google Home” and Matter-compatible devices such as smart light bulbs.
To connect an AI agent to their smart home, users must create a Google Cloud project, configure it to use Home MCP, and provide the configuration details to their chosen agent. The agent then guides users through signing in and granting the necessary permissions. Google will also offer a setup guide through its Google Home Developer Center.
Access is currently limited to U.S. subscribers on the Google Home Premium Advanced tier, a $20-per-month plan that includes features such as extended video history, descriptive notifications, video search tools, and daily summaries. Google said the rollout began on the announcement date and will continue over the coming weeks. The company declined to say whether or when the MCP would expand to other subscription tiers or markets.
Google already uses MCP across other parts of its business, including Google Cloud, developer tools, and Google Workspace. The company described the Google Home integration as aimed more directly at consumers experimenting with AI agents for everyday tasks.
Google is collecting feedback from early adopters through its Smart Home for Developers Community during the access period.
