Google announced on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, a new migration feature built directly into Android 17 that makes it easier for iPhone users to switch to Android. The tool allows users to wirelessly transfer data from an iPhone without needing to download a separate app.
The new method supports a broader range of data types than previous options, including photos, videos, contacts, messages, and calendars. It also adds support for newly covered categories such as Google Account credentials, passwords, Wi-Fi credentials, and eSIM transfers.
Google said the move is aimed at lowering the barriers to switching smartphone ecosystems and attracting more iPhone users to Android.
The feature has already begun rolling out to select Pixel devices and is also available on Samsung’s newly unveiled Galaxy Z Flip8 and Z Fold8 series. Google says the migration tool will expand to additional Android devices in the coming period.
By embedding the migration experience directly into the operating system, the update may reduce friction for users who have previously found the switching process cumbersome. Whether it meaningfully shifts user behavior between smartphone ecosystems remains to be seen.
