Ford Partners With Apple to Embed Maps Directly Into Its Next-Generation EVs

Apple announced in July 2026 a new software development kit called MapKit for Automotive, which allows automakers to embed Apple Maps navigation and mapping directly into vehicle infotainment systems. Ford is the first automaker to adopt the technology, with a commercial agreement already signed between the two companies.

The integration will debut with Ford’s new line of electric vehicles, starting with a $30,000 midsize truck expected in 2027. That truck will be built on a new universal EV platform — a departure from Ford’s traditional manufacturing approach — which will also underpin a sedan, crossover, three-row SUV, and small commercial vans.

Unlike Apple CarPlay, which mirrors iPhone apps onto a vehicle’s display, MapKit for Automotive runs natively within the vehicle itself. Drivers will have access to real-time traffic and incident data, destination search, EV-optimized routing, turn-by-turn directions with natural language support, and battery preconditioning — a feature that brings the battery to optimal temperature before reaching a charging station to reduce charge times. The system could also enable smart home integrations, such as opening a garage door upon arrival.

Apple Maps data will also feed into Ford’s next-generation BlueCruise hands-free driver assistance system, which is expected to roll out in 2027. The updated BlueCruise will be capable of managing full highway journeys, including entrance and exit ramps, with Ford stating the system will eventually support point-to-point autonomy before progressing to eyes-off driving in 2028.

Ford also sees potential applications for its commercial fleet division, Ford Pro. Businesses could use the embedded mapping platform to route drivers to job sites or track other fleet vehicles on the map — capabilities the company says become significantly more practical when mapping is built directly into the vehicle.

Apple has said MapKit for Automotive is open to any automaker, though Ford is its first partner on the platform. Financial terms of the commercial agreement were not disclosed.
