An unknown number of Claude conversations and Artifacts — the interactive mini apps and documents users can build inside the AI platform — were publicly searchable on Google over the weekend of July 26–27, 2026, after Reddit users discovered that search operators like “site:claude.ai/share” surfaced a long list of shared conversations. Some reportedly contained health records, private company documents, and the names and phone numbers of children.
The exposure traces to Claude’s “share chat” feature, which generates a link allowing anyone with the URL to view a conversation or project. Anthropic’s interface warns “Anyone with the link can view,” language that implies sharing with specific individuals or small groups — not the broader internet. By comparison, a similar feature in Google Docs does not result in documents appearing in public search results.
Anthropic placed responsibility on users. Spokeswoman Amie Rotherham told TechCrunch: “We give people control over sharing their Claude conversations publicly, and in keeping with our privacy principles, we do not share chat directories or sitemaps with search engines like Google. These shareable links are not guessable or discoverable unless people choose to share them themselves.” Google spokesperson Ned Adriance echoed that position, stating that Google does not control what pages are made public and that site owners have clear controls to prevent indexing.
Before the issue appeared resolved Monday afternoon, Futurism reported finding a detailed patient medical report, clinical trial results with patient names, documents listing the names and phone numbers of primary school-aged children, and internal company documents among the exposed content. Fortune also reported finding a chat labeled “shared by Anthropic” in which Claude produced sexually explicit content — a violation of Anthropic’s stated usage policy.
A similar incident occurred the previous year, when Google estimated it had indexed just under 600 Claude conversations before they disappeared from search results. In another related case, a researcher was able to scrape around 100,000 publicly shared ChatGPT conversations.
Users can review which Claude chats have a public link by navigating to Settings → Privacy → Shared Chats.
