Bluesky announced on Tuesday, August 26, 2026, that it is increasing the maximum video length on its platform from three minutes to ten minutes. The update also raises the maximum file size to 300MB and delivers upload speeds that are 2x–3x faster than before.
The three-minute limit had itself been an increase from an earlier, shorter cap introduced last year. With the new ten-minute ceiling, Bluesky now matches TikTok’s limit for videos recorded directly within its app, and pulls ahead of Meta’s Threads, which allows videos of up to five minutes.
Because Bluesky is built on the AT Protocol, the change extends beyond Bluesky itself. Third-party apps that run on the same underlying protocol — including Bluescreen, Reelo, and Skylight — will also be able to support longer videos as a result.
By contrast, X allows free users to upload videos of up to 140 seconds, while paying subscribers can upload videos as long as 3–4 hours with file sizes up to 16GB. X has also launched a video editor to encourage original content uploads on its platform.
The move comes as Bluesky faces pressure on user growth. According to data from Similarweb, the platform’s active user base had dropped by more than 25% year-over-year as of July 2026. Expanding video capabilities may be an attempt to reverse that trend and attract a broader audience, as social platforms broadly have made concerted efforts to make their services more video-friendly.
