Bluesky introduced an algorithmic opt-out feature on August 27, 2026, allowing users to prevent their posts from appearing in the platform’s main Discover feed.
The Discover feed can currently surface any public post on Bluesky’s network. The new setting, found in the app’s Privacy and Security section, gives users a way to limit how widely their posts circulate beyond their existing followers. The change can take up to an hour to fully take effect after being enabled.
The company said it created the feature because not all users want their posts exposed to large audiences. Sometimes, Bluesky noted, people simply want to post for their followers without going viral.
The opt-out does not make posts private. Bluesky is still working on rolling out private data support at the protocol level. The feature only reduces how discoverable public posts are to people outside a user’s personal network.
Notably, the preference is recorded at the account level rather than as an in-app setting. This means the choice carries over when users post from third-party apps built on AT Proto, the underlying protocol that powers Bluesky. However, those third-party apps are not required to honor the preference — they have access to the information but must independently choose whether to respect it.
The opt-out feature arrived one day after Bluesky added support for longer videos, continuing a recent stretch of product updates for the open social network.
