Apple held its annual Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) on June 8, 2026, using the keynote address to announce sweeping updates to its software platforms and reveal how its AI partnership with Google will shape its products going forward.
The centerpiece of the event was an expanded integration of Google’s Gemini AI into Apple Intelligence, the company’s AI framework. When the updates roll out in the fall, Gemini will serve as a backbone to improve the conversational ability and contextual awareness of Apple’s apps — including Mail, Messages, Safari, Photos, and Siri. The AI features will be able to draw on what is stored on a user’s device, what is on screen, and what the camera sees to answer questions, generate text and images, and carry out tasks.
Apple software chief Craig Federighi outlined three areas of focus for the keynote: platform improvements, trust and safety updates, and what he described as a “big leap forward” in Apple Intelligence and Siri. The Siri changes are designed to make the assistant feel more like a modern AI chatbot. The broader AI updates span iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and visionOS.
Apple said much of the AI processing will happen on-device — which may limit full functionality to recent, higher-performing hardware — and that any requests sent to the cloud are handled securely.
The event also marked the final WWDC for outgoing CEO Tim Cook, who closed with a personal remark: “I still believe the best is yet ahead.” Apple announced in April that Cook will become executive chairman on September 1, 2026, with John Ternus, currently senior vice president of hardware engineering, taking over as CEO.
The announcements signal how Apple’s long-running AI partnership with Google has materialized into a concrete product strategy, extending well beyond Siri to touch most of Apple’s core apps and operating systems.
