AMD announced on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, that it will invest up to $5 billion in AI company Anthropic and help expand its computing infrastructure through a new partnership.
Under the agreement, Anthropic will deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD’s Instinct MI450 AI GPUs using AMD’s Helios rack-scale system. The companies plan to bring the first gigawatt online in the first half of 2027. The deal was first reported by The Wall Street Journal.
The partnership also includes a multi-year engineering collaboration in which AMD will use Anthropic’s Claude AI model across its software development, engineering, and product development work.
Tom Brown, Anthropic cofounder and chief compute officer, described the rationale in a press release: “By partnering with AMD across the stack, we are securing the capacity we need and optimizing it for training and serving Claude.”
The AMD deal adds to a series of infrastructure agreements Anthropic has pursued. The company has already reached data center deals with SpaceX and TeraWulf, and has signed AI infrastructure agreements with Google, Broadcom, and Amazon. Reports have also suggested Anthropic may reach a similar agreement with Meta.
The scale of the investment and the breadth of Anthropic’s infrastructure partnerships suggest the company is moving aggressively to secure the computing resources needed to develop and serve its AI models. For AMD, the deal provides a significant commercial commitment for its Instinct GPU line and Helios rack system, while also embedding its own engineering teams in one of the AI sector’s prominent model developers.
