TikTok is working on a feature that would let users send money to each other through direct messages, according to a Bloomberg report published in August 2026. References to the feature were found in code hidden within the current version of TikTok’s U.S. iPhone app.
The code suggests recipients would be able to “tap to accept” payments, while senders could attach messages — functionality similar to Venmo. The feature would rely on TikTok Pay, a payment system already available in Southeast Asia for purchases made through TikTok Shop.
TikTok told Bloomberg the feature is not currently being tested, indicating it remains in early development. The company did not respond to TechCrunch’s separate request for comment. It is unclear when or whether TikTok plans to release peer-to-peer payments more broadly.
This would not be TikTok’s first move toward financial services. Earlier in 2026, Reuters reported that TikTok had applied to Brazil’s central bank for approval to operate as a financial technology company offering lending and payment services.
TikTok has steadily expanded beyond its social media origins, adding features such as robust search, TikTok Shop, a local discovery map, games, and hotel bookings. A peer-to-peer payments feature would put TikTok in more direct competition with established services like Venmo and Zelle.
TikTok is not alone among social platforms in pursuing this space. X, formerly known as Twitter, recently launched X Money, which allows users to send money to one another.
