Anthropic confirmed in August 2026 that it is assembling a team to design its own custom chips for AI usage, as demand for its Claude models continues to grow.
The company said it plans to co-design hardware and models together, with the goal of making its technology run faster and more efficiently. A job listing seeks engineers with chip design experience for what Anthropic calls its “custom silicon team.” Business Insider first reported the news, with Anthropic subsequently confirming the details to TechCrunch.
The move follows a report from The Information last month that Anthropic had been scouting Samsung as a potential manufacturing partner for the chips. Anthropic has also previously secured deals with AWS, Google, Nvidia, and AMD to access AI computing hardware.
Anthropic is not the first AI company to pursue its own silicon. OpenAI unveiled its Broadcom-built Jalapeño chip in June 2026, designed specifically for inference workloads. Google DeepMind has long used Alphabet’s TPU chips to power its AI models, and Meta has been developing its own MTIA accelerators for AI workloads.
The decision to develop proprietary chips suggests that relying on third-party hardware suppliers may not be sufficient to meet the scale of demand Anthropic is experiencing. Custom silicon could give the company greater control over the performance and efficiency of its AI systems.
