Signal has added support for linking multiple phones to a single account, allowing users to access and respond to messages across more than one Android or iPhone using the same phone number.
The update began rolling out in August 2026 with Signal version 8.20 on Android and version 8.22 for iPhone and iPad. Previously, Signal supported linking desktop computers and iPads to an account, but additional phones were not permitted.
When a new device is linked, users can send and receive messages across all connected devices simultaneously. Signal also gives users the option to transfer an end-to-end encrypted copy of previous messages to each newly linked device — a choice designed to reduce risk in cases where a linked device is shared, lost, or compromised.
Alongside the multi-phone linking feature, Signal says it has made significant interface improvements to better support large-screen devices. These include several enhancements for foldable phones, which also helped enable support for Android tablets. Signal noted, however, that the large-screen version of its Android app is “still a work in progress,” and that the company is continuing to optimize the interface for its Chromebook app.
For users who rely on Signal across multiple devices — whether for personal and work use or simply for convenience — the update may reduce the need to carry a single designated phone solely for Signal access.
