Meta is bringing audio and video calling to WhatsApp for Web, allowing users to make and receive calls directly from a browser for the first time. The update, announced in July 2026, extends calling capabilities that were previously limited to WhatsApp’s smartphone and native desktop apps.
The web app’s new Calls tab will display call history and favorites, mirroring the layout found in the smartphone and desktop versions. Users will also have access to features already available on desktop, including screen sharing and call reactions.
Alongside the web calling launch, WhatsApp is rolling out several additional call improvements. Users can now transfer an active call between devices — for example, moving a call from a desktop or browser session to a phone — without hanging up and redialing.
WhatsApp is also introducing waiting rooms for group calls. When a call is created using a link, hosts can enable a “Require approval to join” option, allowing them to admit or remove participants as needed. The feature is aimed in part at users who host work-related calls on the platform.
Two further upgrades address call quality. Background noise suppression has been added to filter out ambient sound in louder environments. WhatsApp will also begin streaming video calls in high definition within the first few seconds of a call, rather than taking time to switch to HD quality as it previously did.
Separately, WhatsApp recently opened reservations for usernames. Once that feature goes live, users will be able to use usernames to call others across platforms.
