Meta began rolling out its Meta AI chatbot to Threads direct messages on Monday, July 28, 2026, giving users a private way to interact with the AI assistant within the app.
While Threads users in select markets could already engage with Meta AI in public posts — similar to how Grok functions on X — the new integration moves those conversations into private DMs. Users can share Threads posts, images, links, and videos directly with Meta AI, and can ask follow-up questions to explore topics further.
The rollout is global, launching Monday according to Meta. The company said it is continuing to test Meta AI in Threads public feeds across a handful of markets and is collecting feedback before expanding that feature more broadly.
Meta AI is already available in DMs on Meta’s other platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The Threads integration extends that presence to the company’s X rival.
Meta framed the move as a way to keep users within its ecosystem, with the goal of reducing reliance on third-party AI assistants such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google Gemini. By embedding the chatbot directly into Threads, Meta is positioning the platform as a place where users can get information and recommendations without leaving the app.
Users who prefer to limit Meta AI’s presence in their public feed have several options: they can mute @meta.ai, select “Not interested” on any Meta AI post, or hide Meta AI replies that appear on their own posts.
