Runway launched a new product in July 2026 called the Runway Media Router, a tool that automatically selects the best image, video, or audio generation model for a developer’s request based on priorities such as quality, speed, or cost. The router is available through Runway Dev, the startup’s developer platform released earlier in the month, which offers API access to both Runway’s own models and a growing list of third-party models.
Runway’s chief product officer, Anthony Maggio, told TechCrunch that the router is designed to be “the easiest one-stop shop for developers to integrate with any type of generative media model.” Co-founder and co-CEO Anastasis Germanidis added that orchestration increasingly matters as companies build entire campaigns or multi-scene productions using generative media models.
Current Runway Dev customers include Adobe, Cloudflare, ElevenLabs, Expedia, Shutterstock, and Quora. Runway says the Media Router is the first of its kind built specifically for generative media, as opposed to the model routers that have become common in the large language model space.
Developers can set preferences beyond quality and speed. Maggio noted that some businesses may prefer to exclude Chinese-made models — a consideration that could grow more relevant as the Trump administration explores potential bans and sanctions on Chinese open AI models. Cost routing is also a priority, as enterprises using agentic AI have faced high token bills in 2026.
The router’s intelligence layer draws on evaluations conducted by Runway’s in-house creative team, covering how different models handle motion, composition, and lip syncing. Runway had already built similar routing technology for its own agent product, launched in May 2026.
The launch reflects a broader strategic shift for Runway. The startup’s text-to-video and image-to-video models no longer lead industry rankings, which now include models from Google, ByteDance, and Alibaba. Rather than competing solely on model performance, Runway is positioning itself as an orchestration layer — one that remains useful to developers regardless of which underlying model performs best at any given time.
