Instagram head Adam Mosseri says the platform should give users the ability to remove AI-generated content from their feeds — but stop short of banning it outright. Mosseri made the comments in a July 2026 interview on Lenny Rachitsky’s podcast.
“I don’t think we should filter out AI content,” Mosseri said. “I think we should let you know if content is AI content or not.” He added that users who dislike AI content “shouldn’t have it in your feed,” while those who enjoy it “should be able to have a feed that’s just AI town.”
Instagram currently labels AI-generated content, as do TikTok, YouTube, and Facebook, but none of these platforms offer users an option to filter it from their feeds. Mosseri acknowledged that detecting AI content is “hard” and that Instagram may “lose the ability” to identify AI posts as models improve. As a potential workaround, he suggested it might be “more practical” to label non-AI “camera-captured content” instead — an approach he had previously floated in December 2025 when discussing the fingerprinting of “real media.”
Mosseri also noted that Instagram needs to “figure out how to crack down” on spammy AI content, even as the platform continues to expand its AI capabilities. Meta recently launched an AI image generator called Muse Spark, which allows Instagram users to place other users into AI-created images simply by tagging them.
That feature has drawn criticism from Haley McNamara, executive director of the National Center on Sexual Exploitation, who said it “creates obvious and foreseeable opportunities for exploitation, sexual abuse, harassment, and identity fraud.” The concern highlights the tension between Instagram’s embrace of AI tools and the potential harms those tools may enable.
