OpenAI is shutting down ChatGPT Atlas, its autonomous web browser, with a deprecation date set for August 9th, 2026 — less than a year after the product was announced in October 2025.
The company confirmed the shutdown as part of a broader set of announcements around ChatGPT Work, a new desktop offering that includes an updated browser within the ChatGPT app and a cloud browser for work mode. OpenAI’s James Sun acknowledged Atlas users in a thread about the ChatGPT Work launch, stating: “All these capabilities were built on what we learned from Atlas users who took a leap of faith on a new browser. You taught us how agents can help make browsing and doing work on the open web better, and we are applying these learnings to these new products.”
The decision to sunset Atlas follows OpenAI’s stated effort to reduce “side quests” and focus on productivity features. In March 2026, The Wall Street Journal reported that OpenAI planned to merge the ChatGPT app, Codex, and Atlas into a single desktop application. ChatGPT Work appears to be the result of those consolidation efforts.
Atlas is not the only product OpenAI has wound down recently. The company also shut down its video generation app Sora and paused plans for a ChatGPT “adult mode” in recent months.
For users who adopted Atlas, the shutdown suggests the browser served more as a testing ground than a long-term product — with the lessons learned now folded into OpenAI’s broader ChatGPT Work platform.
