Meta is working on prototype smart glasses that would record audio and snap photos continuously throughout the day, according to a July 2026 report from the Financial Times. The company is internally calling the feature “super sensing,” and the glasses would allow wearers to query Meta AI about the captured audio and images.
In one proposed system described by the FT, raw footage and audio would not be stored by Meta or made directly available to the user. Instead, metadata extracted from the audio and images would be uploaded to Meta’s servers for its AI to query — an approach that proponents argue carries fewer privacy implications. Meta is also reportedly discussing whether the captured data could be used to train its AI models.
A significant privacy concern surrounds the LED recording indicator. Meta’s current plan would keep the indicator off during “super sensing” mode, reserving it only for “active capture” scenarios where users are deliberately saving photos or videos. The company outlined this approach in a July 2025 whitepaper, stating the indicator would remain off during AI feature use — such as scanning a menu — to avoid users becoming desensitized to it.
The development comes as Meta already faces scrutiny over facial recognition features, reports of users filming women with its existing glasses, and a modding community that removes the LED indicators. Meta announced Tuesday that a software update will disable the camera if the glasses detect the LED has been tampered with.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg signaled this direction in the company’s Q1 2026 earnings call, saying he was “really excited to see the glasses evolve from being able to answer questions to being able to be a personal agent that’s with you all day long.” The company also wrote in a March blog post that Meta AI on glasses would transition toward “a more continuous, in-the-moment assistant.”
Meta spokesperson Dave Arnold told The Verge that the company is “committed to getting our glasses right” and that its “approach has been to develop new technologies that will help people throughout their day, with privacy built in from the ground up.” The FT reports that Meta may also bring “super sensing” features to glasses it has already released.
