Meta announced in 2026 that it will update its smart glasses with a feature that automatically disables the camera if the device detects tampering with or destruction of its built-in privacy LED light. The move follows public backlash over misuse of the glasses’ recording capabilities.
The update is a direct response to modders who have physically altered the privacy indicator — including drilling into the LED — to allow covert recording. Meta had previously attempted to address this issue starting with its second-generation glasses, which prompt users to uncover the recording light if it is blocked with tape or another object. However, modders found workarounds for that measure, prompting the more aggressive hardware-level response.
Meta VP of Wearables Alex Himel told The Verge that the privacy-focused update was in development weeks before the announcement, which came shortly after Meta launched a cheaper version of its smart glasses without Ray-Ban branding. Himel acknowledged at that time that the company was aware of increasing misuse of the devices alongside their wider adoption.
The new feature suggests Meta is escalating its technical approach to enforcing privacy safeguards, moving beyond software prompts to a camera-disabling mechanism tied directly to the physical state of the LED. This could make it significantly harder for users to modify the glasses for covert recording, though whether it fully closes off workarounds remains to be seen.
