Meta announced in July 2026 the launch of Muse Image, its first AI image generation model developed by its Superintelligence Labs division. The model now powers image-making tools across the Meta AI app, Instagram, and WhatsApp, with support for Facebook and Messenger coming soon.
One of the model’s notable features allows users to @ mention other Instagram accounts directly in prompts, enabling Muse Image to incorporate those users’ likenesses into generated images. According to Meta, “tagging a username lets Meta AI use public photos to build a visual,” though the company says users can control how others reuse their content for AI purposes.
Beyond likeness integration, Muse Image supports a range of other functions. Users can transform images using suggested prompts, create designs for items such as invitations and postcards, and make edits to photos by drawing directly on top of them. Images can then be shared to a feed, story, or chat. The model can also redesign rooms based on images pulled from Facebook Marketplace or elsewhere on the web.
Muse Image will also power 30 new AI effects coming to Instagram Stories in the United States, with a broader rollout to other countries and additional areas of Meta’s apps planned for later.
The launch marks the first public product from Meta’s Superintelligence Labs and extends AI image generation capabilities across much of the company’s platform ecosystem. The ability to pull in other users’ public photos based on an @ mention may draw scrutiny around consent and content control, though Meta says individual users retain some ability to manage how their images are used.
