Samsung will begin charging for access to its SmartThings API in October 2026, introducing a range of paid tiers that will affect both developers and some advanced smart home users.
The new pricing structure includes a $4.99 monthly plan aimed at “non-commercial, individual developers.” However, the changes may reach beyond professional developers. Advanced smart home users who access the SmartThings API directly for more flexible home controls — or who rely on third-party tools that do so — could also be subject to the new fees.
Paulus Schoutsen, founder of open-source smart home platform Home Assistant, confirmed the impact in a blog post: “Use of the Home Assistant integration will be affected by their changes and will fall under their new ‘personal plans.'”
Samsung said the new pricing will allow it to “invest heavily in the enterprise-grade features our partners and users have been asking for,” citing planned stability improvements, new integrations, and a refresh of its Developer Center hub.
