Google released Android 17 and Wear OS 7 on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, rolling out the updates first to its Pixel devices alongside a Pixel Drop that brings support for several new AI models and additional device features.
The AI additions include Gemini Omni, which can now edit videos within a conversation, and Lyria 3, a music generation model that lets users create audio tracks from text prompts or images inside the Gemini app. Pixel 10a devices gain improved speech-to-speech translation through AudioLM. The Pixel Drop also makes Android Quick Share compatible with Apple’s AirDrop on Pixel 8a and 9a devices.
Beyond AI, Android 17 introduces a “bubble bar” — a new interface element that displays recent apps as movable bubbles along the bottom of the screen to speed up app switching and multi-app workflows. A new screen recording mode lets users capture both their selfie camera and phone screen simultaneously for reaction-style videos. A foldable gaming mode adds a 50/50 split layout with a dynamic gamepad.
Parental controls and security tools also received updates, including a “Mark as Lost” feature in Find Hub, Live Threat Detection, screen time limits, and content filtering that can be configured with a PIN without requiring a Google account link.
Wear OS 7 brings emergency detection to the Pixel Watch — automatically contacting emergency services and designated contacts if the watch detects a car crash, fall, or lack of pulse. Watch owners can also receive live updates from phone apps mirrored to the device. Google says battery life improvements of up to 10% are included, along with multi-step automation. Additional Gemini features for Wear OS, including personalized widgets and “Personal Intelligence” that connects Google apps and chat history, are expected later this summer.
Google has framed Android 17 as part of its broader strategy to use Android and Pixel hardware to demonstrate its latest AI capabilities. The company noted that rival Apple is targeting a public launch of AI upgrades to Siri and iOS 27 in September 2026.
