A WIRED investigation published in June 2026 found dozens of nonconsensual explicit AI-generated images and videos hosted on Grok.com, Elon Musk’s xAI chatbot platform — months after the company said it had introduced restrictions to prevent such content.
The investigation reviewed hundreds of public links on Grok.com and found content depicting celebrities and at least one US politician, including Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The images and videos included depictions of women performing sex acts, full nudity, and scenarios in which women were portrayed being held against their will. One prompt described a celebrity being held by a “giant man” who “licks her face up and down” as she “pleads for him not to do this.” Some content was photorealistic; other material used animated styles.
The revelations come as SpaceX, xAI’s parent company, prepares to go public in what the source describes as one of the largest IPOs of all time. xAI has faced lawsuits and regulatory scrutiny since January 2026, when a wave of “nudification” images — created by asking Grok to edit photos of women into “bikinis” — spread across X. A class-action lawsuit filed in California federal court in March alleged that images of apparent minors were also sexualized.
After WIRED contacted xAI and X for comment, the identified images and videos were removed from Grok.com, and related posts on X were taken down for policy violations. Neither company responded to WIRED’s initial request for comment.
Deepfake expert Henry Ajder told WIRED that while xAI may have made some changes following earlier backlash, the platform still falls short of safety standards maintained by other mainstream generative AI tools.
xAI has previously stated it strictly prohibits nonconsensual explicit deepfakes and the use of its tools to undress real people, and has said child sexual abuse material is banned on its platform.
