AethexAI, a startup focused on voice AI for Africa and the Middle East, announced a $3 million pre-seed funding round in 2026, led by 4DX Ventures with participation from Enza Capital, Dorm Room Fund, Mojo Ventures, and Stanford GSB 26 Fund. The company says its platform is now handling more than 17,000 calls per day.
The startup was founded by Mariama Diallo and Ayooluwa Odemuyiwa. Diallo, who serves as CEO, previously worked at Goldman Sachs and YC-backed ModelML. CTO Odemuyiwa graduated from Caltech, worked at Meta, and attended Stanford Business School before co-founding the company. Individual investors include Stanford faculty, telecom executives, and AI researchers from Anthropic.
Rather than building on existing orchestration tools like Vapi or LiveKit, AethexAI developed its own small model series — called Kora — with parameters ranging from 300 million to 1.7 billion, along with a custom orchestration layer. The decision was driven by latency problems the founders observed when testing existing voice AI systems in the region. “The latency and jitter that we saw on automated calls in this region were outrageous,” Odemuyiwa said. Training data came from anonymized call center recordings, audio collected from radio stations across Africa via shipped hard drives, and annotations contributed by university students.
The models are designed to handle localized dialects of English, French, and Arabic. Current use cases include debt collection calls, customer activation, and KYC — Know Your Customer — identity verification for banks and telecoms. The company is also launching a platform for enterprise customers alongside APIs and SDKs for developers.
Walter Baddoo, co-founder and managing partner of 4DX Ventures, noted that enterprises in Africa and the Middle East process roughly three times the call volume of their Western counterparts, with voice remaining the dominant customer interaction channel. He argued that incumbent voice AI systems were built for Western infrastructure and speech environments, creating gaps that regional specialists may be positioned to fill.
AethexAI is hiring forward-deployed engineers on a contract basis and building channel partnerships with telecom providers to handle telephony for its voice AI calls.
